Coterie is a noun and means the following:

- An intimate group with unifying common interests or purpose

- An often exclusive and sometimes private group of people

Coterie's are not necessarily a "clique of mates"

Coterie is often applied to groups in a negative or condescending tone

Those in a coterie may be friends, colleagues, believers or conspirators 

Coterie members are seen as a "hanger-on", lickspittle or sycophant
