Smug is an adjective and from my research means the following:
- To be too pleased or satisfied about your knowledge or achievements
- To attempt to belittle others by your dress or demeaner
- To be scrupulously clean, neat, or overly correct in chosen attire

Smug is a word with dual uses, regarding personal behaviour or attire
If someone says you are smug, or being smug it is not a compliment
To act smugly or exhibit smugness is not generally a desirable trait
Smugness and gloating are interchangeable in use.
Your appearance may be smug (overly smart) but you may not be smug
