Just another advert

Have you ever read an article or seen a programme piece where you realise it's really nothing other than a thinly disguised advertisement, be it for a book, film, recording, play, or any manner of things someone is wishing to "push" at that time. Do you dislike, as I do, the seemingly incessant drip of "promotional material" and resent the absolute cynicism of those who profess to entertain, enlighten or educate us and yet collude with media or "self-promoters" to fill our air-time or attention with vacuous rubbish.

I accept shopping channels and regular advertisements because they are true to their aims, but the rest I feel to be an intrusion akin to Click-Bait; vacuous content for gullible people.

I know I'm moaning and, to use a bit of British slang, "pissing in the wind", but but do you ever tire of such veiled advertising?

Getting married? - Let me tell you about sheets!

What caused this moan was a BBC "human interest" article, ostensibly telling me of the anguish and guilt of a mother who had a child at the age of 16 (for Gods sake!) and now regrets not fully engaging with her daughter throughout her rearing. The bait is clear, the story seems enlightening, but it turns out to be an advert for a new book and the "bigging-up" of a very minor poet/author; the daughter is almost incidental to the article's main aim: Sell that book! (And shame on the BBC)

Word of the day - FRITTER

The word today is Fritter

Fritter is an unusual word in the English language as it means both a piece of food (an actual Fritter) and gross wastefulness.

Fritter is a noun / verb  depending upon its use and means the following:

- A piece of food fried with a batter coating = noun

- The act of wilfully squandering a resource, skill or asset(s) = verb

A fritter can be very tasty when eaten
Almost any piece of food may be frittered (fried in a batter)
To fritter means to wilfully or wantonly waste something
Almost anything can be frittered-away

Dictionary definitions are here or here and if you fancy cooking fritters, here are 25 variants.

There is an index of words of the day.

There are other words having dual meaning.

If you are brave or foolish enough to dig into the different types of words in English, try this.

Girl Power - VOC - you go girls!

Men have for the most part fucked this world, shaped it then fucked it, through politics, war, discrimination and male hubris. I believe woman in all walks of life should get the same rights, payment and respect as men, though if and when that happens is unpredictable, it is most likely through politics.

Voice Of Baceprot (VOC)

Voice Of Baceprot (VOC) has both a real place (Jalan Raya Banjarwangi) on Jakarta Island and is an Indonesian all-girl band, conformist and yet musically liberated (and liberating). Not yet a "Spice Girls", VOC are not as big but just as inspirational. They are on their way (into to Glastonbury festival history) and I wish them well.

Petty-minded little twats

Petty-minded little twat!

That's what many think about Gideon Falter, who demanded the resignation of the head of the Metropolitan Police, just because a low-ranking officer policing a pro-Palestinian protest suggested that being there wearing his kippah (for reasons you may speculate upon) and thus being "openly Jewish", he could precipitate a breach of the peace upon himself (at that time, at that protest). The officer was not putting Palestinians before Jews, nor putting down Jews, nor giving a toss (probably) about the pointless protest.

Gideon's apparently pathetic behaviour is akin to asking his surgeon to resign because he didn't like a porter. If he had been attacked I guess he'd be happy to receive assistance from that same officer, who wouldn't care less about him being a Jew: an over-focussed busy-body Jew in this instance, who could maybe think less of his Jewish-ness and "scoring points" off an easy target and more about the antipathy he generates against his true cause (whatever that is).

I get that he want's to push the "rights" of Jews via "his" NGO body called Campaign Against Antisemitism, but really? Talk about inflating a perceived slight into front-page news (with media assistance); when someone calls out to me, "you fat bastard" (as I am!) I don't shout back, "you can't say that because I'm a Jew", nor do I call for my doctor to resign because he can't make me thin.

Let's all keep our ongoing struggles in perspective, nor call the Prime Minister to be appalled on our behalf. Talk about "the media" hyping stories. You need look no further than this.

If you remain vaguely interested in the plight of Gideon Falter here are a few links.

The BBC reported this.

Gideon Falter says this (in The Mail Online). Note the minders.

Hear that man grind his axe (copper exonerated)

Side Note: Ultra orthodox Jews living in Israel are now deemed eligible for conscription into the Israeli army and as the war in Gaza grinds on their indignation is obvious in their selfish collective protestations. Their religious exemption has been removed and funding for their seminaries suspended, but at last they will be able to "fight" those that their fellow right-wing political brethren seemingly want eradicating. I hope their sincere beliefs will protect them from PTSD and the carnage they are now expected to embark upon and that battle-hardened troops will greet them into their world without any resentment for their orthodoxy. If lucky enough to hold dual nationality I guess they could scuttle back to productive studies in another country?

------------------------- // -------------------------

Deluded British MPs Abitsam Mohamed and Yuan Yang

What on earth were these two idiots trying to achieve, or expect from their rather odd decision to "visit" Gaza for fact-finding and why the apparent political upset in the UK that they were turned away by Israel, which they and their ilk condemned as political censorship. It may well have been because Israel have no desire to interact with minor-league MPs who have a righteous self-affirming feeling they would like to "fact-find". I think we have all the facts we need about Israel's actions of late.

They went to Gaza without a cat in Hell's chance of influencing anything there, but believed that as  British Members of Parliament they would be welcomed to (re)view Israel's dirty little war. They were deluded! As for their political cohort, who are apparently indignant and dismayed at Israel's denial of their Gaza trip, I would say stop trying to score cheap political points, wake-up to your true importance in the real world and concentrate on the needs of your constituency.

I just hope it was a self-funded trip and not paid for by public tax money.

Guinea-Bissau nutcase - Adam Mendes (formerly Valdo Amissão Mendes Calocane)

Being a 2022 Nottingham graduate in mechanical engineering, this former student didn't "go home", nor gain employment, though a quirk of the Brexit negotiations has allowed him to remain in the UK, being deemed to have achieved settled status, presumably on the basis of living in Nottingham whilst a student; that or the fact he holds a Portuguese passport. He has however been charged with multiple murders.

"Settled status" may be revoked for serious crime (such as multiple murders!) and you are deported. I think he is now more than qualified after killing 3 random strangers and driving a van into a crowd.

He arrived in the UK and was first suspected of schizophrenia in 2020 and should be sent back from whence he came, be that Portugal (Portuguese passport holder) or his birth country of Guinea-Bissau (former Portuguese "colony"). Medically unfit or not, with parasitic "human rights lawyers" claiming that he's not responsible for his actions, kick him out forever. I'm sure if he'd killed their children the lawyers would maybe sing a different tune.

Adam Mendes (formerly Valdo Amissão Mendes Calocane)

The legal definitions of the difference between settled status and being a true British citizen is here and the families of the 3 victims are certainly not happy with the judgement.

A year on from the case, its fall-out from this continues: The judge argues the sentence was not lenient, whilst relatives of the dead and injured are not so sure as a report finds a series of errors and
mismanagement of the case, including his supposed medical care before his murders. Being committed to an "indefinite hospital order" means he could be cared for all his life or back on the streets sooner than you may think. His citizenship should be revoked and he should go back from where he came, for his sentence will be finite, but the suffering of his victims, not so.

Update 23rd May 2025 - Investigations have revealed many other incidents by patients of the same Nottinghamshire Care NHS Trust.

Update 26th Sep 2025 - The fall-out from this case and the inevitable post-crime review it precipitated for the Independent Office for Police Conduct ((IOPC), came back into view today, for the IOPC has removed a number of its staff for allegedly giving serving officers details from that investigation; presumably to assist those officer in any future defence of their earlier actions prior to the murder of three people. The review case seems to be driven by the families of the deceased, who want to know how it came to be that such a dangerous person was allowed to be amongst the public.

Should you buy Morrisons food from Peru?

I ask this because I think it rather obscene the such simple foodstuffs as Asparagus and Mandarins are regularly transported huge distance to reach their market(s). Transportation (Lorry / Train / Flight or Ship / Lorry) alone is polluting out of all proportion to the importance of the goods delivered; it only happens because someone can "earn a buck" without consideration of global damage. I buy locally sourced products and ask you to do so too.

Apollo astronaut BILL ANDERS - R.I.P.

The USA's Apollo program of exploration of how to get to the moon and finally land upon it mesmerised many people of the world throughout the '60s and '70s, as it did me as a young lad, but notwithstanding the immensity of that human achievement little change for humankind sprang from it.

Apart from one thing,

One single photograph, taken by the lunar module pilot of Apollo 8, William "Bill" Anders, encapsulated emotions and knowledge never before experienced by practically the whole human race. A single photograph, possibly the most awe inspiring ever taken, shows the graceful beauty and visual fragility of Earth as never before; a now totemic image, still able to generate reverence and contemplation, which inspired in many an awareness of global fragility and the need for "greener" global policies.

The barren landscape of the moon accentuates the vivid blue of Earth's cosmic presentation, showing a pristine planet which we know is no-longer the truth. It inspires and yet reminds us only of what was, for humankind is ruining it. To put it bluntly, we are pissing in our own pot for a multitude of evolutionary and despotic reasons and will probably continue to do so until Earth says, "no more!".

Leaving aside that thought, I wish to note the passing of its creator, astronaut Bill Anders, a space pioneer who died as he had lived: on the dramatic edge of life where only those with "the right stuff" survive, of which a film was made.

The passing of fellow Apollo crew member Jim Lovell is here.

Word of the day - MISANTHROPIC

The word today is Misanthropic

Misanthropic is an adjective and from my research means the following:

- To exhibit, express or  verbalise scorn or hared of humankind

- To show distrust of humankind's aspirations and creeds

- To not trust nor accept any enduring goodness in humankind

Darn it! - I can't find a picture to express being misanthropic

If described as misanthropic, people think you dour and miserable
To be misanthropic you must be a misanthrope
To be a misanthrope you must have acute mistrust of humankind
A misanthrope mistrusts' any aspect of human action, intent or creed
An act of misanthropy is a misanthrope being misanthropic
The opposite of misanthropy is philanthropy!

FACEBOOK SUPPORTING CRIME

Facebook (algorithms) facilitates crimes?

Revision Note: I started this crusade fully expecting Facebook to ignore my reporting of the sites below, but to be honest most are no longer on Facebook (in the guise I found them). I'm leaving this entry here to record objectionable site I've come across.

If you find dodgy Facebook sites you must object to Facebook using your Facebook account. Do this because the complaint processing is algorithm driven and a dodgy site only gets deleted if there are enough complaints against it; so please do your bit to help tidy Facebook. If all legitimate users do this criminals may find they spend all their time replacing their crooked sites closed by Facebook, rather then scamming and breaking the law.

 FACEBOOK SUPPORTING CRIME CASE #1

If the link here to a genuine Facebook user remains active (after it was reported on Dec. 6th 2023) it illustrates how Facebook supports crime(s). Selling drugs and real/fake DVLA docs (used to legitimise illegal immigrants) this Facebook ID of "David Hemsley of Liverpool", has updated "her" profile picture several time to fully publicise illegal wares and also gives an external Telegram site link (https://t.me/jay_pahd420), where the full extent of this person is revealed. Though this person wears black gloves, one of "his" white hands is clearly shown in a short on this site.

If you come across sites selling fakes, drugs, or originals that are created for the purposes of deception or illegal use then report them to Facebook/Police and keep tabs on whether Facebook do anything about it or not - I bet they will do very little.

FACEBOOK SUPPORTING CRIME CASE #2

If the link here to a genuine Facebook user remains active (after it was reported on Dec. 7th 2023) it illustrates how Facebook supports crime(s). Selling drugs such as Codeine Phosphate, Farmapram, Zopiclone, Oxycodone, Xanax, cloned cards and fake money, delivered by Royal Mail special delivery, this Facebook ID of "Craig Belton Fraise, aka Benzos", has updated his profile picture to fully publicise illegal wares and also gives an external Telegram site link (https://t.me/Whiteruntsexostic), where the full extent of this person is revealed.

If you come across sites selling fakes, drugs, or originals that are created for the purposes of deception or illegal use then report them to Facebook/Police and keep tabs on whether Facebook do anything about it or not - I bet they will do very little.

FACEBOOK SUPPORTING CRIME CASE #3

If the link here to a genuine Facebook user remains active (after it was reported on Dec. 7th 2023) it illustrates how Facebook supports crime(s). Selling drugs, real/fake DVLA docs (used to legitimise illegal immigrants), fake money and cloned cards, this Facebook ID of "GetUkdrivinglicence.Clonecards.Propnotes Jackson" of Swansea, has updated their profile picture to fully publicise illegal wares and also gives an external GB WhatsApp contact number, where the full extent of this person is revealed.

If you come across sites selling fakes, drugs, or originals that are created for the purposes of deception or illegal use then report them to Facebook/Police and keep tabs on whether Facebook do anything about it or not - I bet they will do very little.

FACEBOOK SUPPORTING CRIME CASE #4

If the link here to a genuine Facebook user remains active (after it was reported on Dec. 7th 2023) it illustrates how Facebook supports crime(s). Selling drugs, real/fake DVLA docs (used to legitimise illegal immigrants), fake money and cloned cards, this Facebook ID of "GetUkdrivinglicence.Clonecards.Propnotes(Jackson) aka Kialorenaldo" this time from Shillingford in Devon, has updated their profile picture to fully publicise illegal wares and also gives an external Telegram site link (https://t.me/ukclonescarddrivinglicense), where the full extent of this person is revealed.

If you come across sites selling fakes, drugs, or originals that are created for the purposes of deception or illegal use then report them to Facebook/Police and keep tabs on whether Facebook do anything about it or not.

FACEBOOK SUPPORTING CRIME CASE #5

If the link here to a genuine Facebook user remains active (after it was reported on Dec. 7th 2023) it illustrates how Facebook supports crime(s). Selling drugs, real/fake DVLA docs (used to legitimise illegal immigrants), fake money and cloned cards, this Facebook ID of "GetUkdrivinglicense.Clonecards.Propnotes Bismark", this time again from Shillingford in Devon, has updated "her" profile picture to fully publicise illegal wares and also gives an external Telegram site link (https://t.me/ukclonescarddrivinglicense), where the full extent of this person is revealed.

If you come across sites selling fakes, drugs, or originals that are created for the purposes of deception or illegal use then report them to Facebook/Police and keep tabs on whether Facebook do anything about it or not - I bet they will do very little.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT ....

What Is Democracy?

Democracy is managed anarchy.

Update April 2024: Since I first published this article in April 2016 I now realise how glib it was. The world has got a lot meaner and dictators seem to be ascendant; certainly right-wing politics at the very least. The number of global whingers and whiners seems to be reaching epidemic levels and WOKEism and tokenism is at a point of absurdity. The hatred of the Jewish state (Israel) is certainly at an all time high since WW2 because of an ongoing genocide in Gaza, whilst Russia is now playing its roulette with peace in Europe, as Trump looks to take America into very odd waters.

Which leads me to my rewrite of the original article.

Democracy is not the only manager of Anarchy, for many "regimes" keep true Anarchy at bay, be they despotic (Putin with Russia and North Korea), Authoritarian (Burma and Arabian peninsular countries for example), Communistic (China and pals); in fact any regime that manages true Anarchy will do and the only country not able to manage anarchy at the moment seems to be Haiti, where gang rule is now seemingly the new norm, forcing their neighbour, the Dominican Republic to deport 10,000 unwelcome migrants a week.

Update July 2025: Haiti remains unable to manage its anarchy, for gangs still control many parts of the country, which has descended into a sort of medieval feudal state. Woman suffer most, as they always do, whilst guns flood in, mostly from the USA.

Remember: Maria Krystyna Janina Skarbek (aka Christine Granville)

Here is a British agent active during world war 2. She was a member of Britain' SOE (Special Operation Executive).

She was Polish by birth and served the United Kingdom with resolution and distinction behind enemy lines. Born Maria Krystyna Janina Skarberk, she Anglicized her name to Christine Granville.

Like many Poles who served for the UK, she will drift into history and her story lost, but take a little time here to honour her.

RIP Maria Krystyna Janina Skarberk (aka Christina Granville)

A wonder of nature

In northern Illinois a rare natural occurrence is due to happen in 2024, the first since 1803. This will annoy many residents, for though spectacular, the noise, smell and predation on crops and greenery will be of biblical proportions. Read all about it here.

N.B. I have personally experienced a similar event in Australia in the early 90's, in the stare of Victoria, and the noise alone was tiring to say the least. Get those ear-defenders out Illinois!

Cicada noise is mind-blowing

Some are weird facts about Cicadas:

-   There are 6 species of Cicadas
-   3 species emerge en masse from underground every 13 years
-   3 other species do likewise every 17 years.
-   What maintains their clocks is unknown
-   All emerge from the ground within hours, looking to mate
-   The advantage of this reproductive strategy not known
-   They emerge from the ground within hours
-   The 13 years broods are mostly in Southern global regions
-   The 17 years broods are mostly in Northern global regions
-   The two types are different in size and colouration
-   The 17 years are smaller, the 13's a lot larger

Word of the day - CRIKEY

The word today is Crikey

Crikey is used mostly by the British but is making in-roads into other Anglicised parts of the world. Its first recorded use was in 1826 and it is unusual in that it seems uncategorised (verb, noun, adjective, etc.), possibly because of  it's vague meaning(s). It's commonly described as an informal British interjection.

I like the word Crikey because it typifies, along with other slang words, the quirky character of truly British people, if I hear these words when travelling abroad they immediately reveal the origin of the speaker.

The etymology of Crikey suggests it to be a contraction of the phrase "Christ Almighty", suggesting its first and original meaning was an expression of shock, fear, surprise, awe and incredulity. The word Gobsmacked could substitute for Crikey, as could Blimey.

Here are a few definitions I found of Crikey.

- To express surprise, speechlessness, incredulity, disbelief, amazement

- To underscore, accentuate, mark or acknowledge an action or mishap

- To express a sense of awe or irony in what is said by another or seen

A word from England, but spreading

Seen someone walk on water or fly unaided? Crikey!
An ugly friend is dating a gorgeous girl?         Crikey!
Someone says you have won a £million. You could respond with Crikey
To any incredulous event or statement or action, you say Crikey

Just by chance I came across this example, when the shock of a British prime minister dumping 7 party members was distilled into crikey; then I found an Australian site actually called Crikey.

Word of the day - BLIMEY

The word today is Blimey

Blimey is used mostly by the British and rarely used in other Anglicised parts of the world. It came into (documented) usage in 1889 and is unusual in that it seems uncategorised (verb, noun, adjective, etc.), possibly because of  it's vague meaning(s). It's commonly described as an informal British interjection.

I like the word Blimey because it typifies, along with other slang words, the quirky character of truly British people, if I hear these words when travelling abroad they immediately reveal the origin of the speaker.

The etymology of Blimey suggests it is a contraction of the phrase "God blind me", evolving into "blind me" and finally Blimey, suggesting its first and original meaning was an expression of shock, fear, incredulity and the wish for God to remove an image or apparition; which boiled-down over time to meaning shock, surprise, disbelief and awe. The word Gobsmacked could substitute for Blimey, as could Crikey.

Here are a few definitions I found of Blimey.

- To express surprise, speechlessness, incredulity, disbelief, amazement

- To underscore, accentuate, mark an action or statement of someone

- To express a sense of irony in what is said by another or seen

Word of the day - ACERBIC

The word today is Acerbic

Acerbic is an adjective and from my research means the following:

- To be sharply and bitingly critical of something

- To be sarcastic or bad tempered in tone whilst reviewing something

- To speak or write in a way that is direct, clever and cruel

If described as acerbic, people think your language critical, yet witty
If described as acerbic your humour is dry, pithy and critical
To be described as acerbic means you critically cut through the crap

Word of the day - SOUPÇON

The word today is Soupçon

Soupçon is a noun and means the following:

- A very small amount, just a trace, or hardly any at all

- A suspicion or suggestion of something - a soupçon of worry

Translates as "The Era Of Suspicion"

Soupçon is derived from a French word, itself from old Latin
The French version (pronounced the same) still means suspicion
Today soupçon is mainly used to "flag" a comment as being acerbic
e.g. Do you possibly have a soupçon of energy to get out of that bed?
e.g. I have a soupçon of fear of poisoning with your food
This is a word headed for obsolescence, being replaced by "just a bit"
e.g. Just a bit of milk in tea = a soupçon of milk in my tea please
  e.g. A little niggling worry about something = a soupçon of fear/doubt

LOVE HURTS (TROUBLED TIMES)

(An Actor)

An experience in my life that I can never forget, nor really comprehend, was the breakdown a close friend endured very early in adulthood. I was told stuff by the medics, but knew only that we both were bewildered at the time and, with hindsight, emotionally bonded. I tried to remain "strong" and "chipper" but still feel I let them down. This poem was one of many from that time.

If you think of dying
don't leave me alone,
tell me in the morning,
or warn me on the phone.

If you want to leave this world,
just want to get away,
I think I'd like to come along,
but maybe not today.

If you want to leave me
try to tell me why,
so I can understand you,
as I begin to die.

Though you have your troubles
and suffering we are,
call me anyway,
we'll chat in the car.

Above all else,
and this is paramount,
know you are my Chessy
loved,
without a doubt.
